Ohara Koson (1877-1945) was a Japanese artist of the shin-hanga, or 'new prints', movement. He is celebrated for his kacho-e: elegant, closely observed prints of birds, flowers and animals. Koson gave a single sparrow or a snail the same care other painters saved for grand scenes. That patience is why his work still reads as fresh today.
This collection follows the subjects Koson loved best. Cherry blossom with birds and Swallows With Cherry Blossom show his eye for a bird caught mid-turn. Rooster and Hen and Sparrows on bamboo tree bring the same close attention to feather and stance. For a quieter mood, Cherry on a Moonlit Night sets pale blossom against a deep night sky. Koson's prints suit Indian homes that favour calm over clutter. A single study, such as Bullfinch on Flowering Plum, holds a reading corner or a bedside wall without crowding it.
