Helen Frankenthaler was an American painter who worked at the heart of Abstract Expressionism. She lived from 1928 to 2011. She pioneered the soak-stain technique, pouring thinned paint directly onto raw canvas. The colour sank into the weave rather than sitting on top. This gave her large fields of luminous colour a soft, breathing quality. Her method influenced a generation of painters who came after her. Her work stayed abstract while remaining warm and open.
