What magnetic wallpaper is

The paper is never the magnet. A magnetic wall is built in layers: a receptive primer or a thin ferrous sheet goes onto the plaster first, and the printed covering goes over the top. That iron layer is wall preparation, settled before papering, and we do not list it. The designs shown here are our wider wallpaper range, not a filtered magnetic set.

Walls worth making magnetic

It suits walls that keep changing. A child's room, where drawings go up weekly and nail holes are tedious to fill. A study, where a timetable belongs at eye level rather than under a laptop. Not behind the hob, which is a tile's job, and not on a damp wall, where seepage bubbles through long after the installer has gone.

Measuring, ordering and fitting

The covering is sold by the square foot and cut to your wall rather than in fixed rolls, from Rs 129 per square foot, so you supply a width and a height. The wall wants to be clean, smooth, oil-primed and dry first, ferrous layer included. Installation is free on orders over Rs 5,000 for walls up to 10 feet in major cities; taller walls, ceilings and curves can cost extra.

Cleaning and living with it

Clean it with a damp cloth and a light hand. Pressure burnishes a printed surface and the burnished patch stays visible, so wipe rather than scrub, gently across the seams where the 2 to 4 foot sections overlap by half to one inch. The material is non-toxic and PVC-free. Changing what hangs there leaves no holes to fill.

Magnetic wallpaper: common questions

What is magnetic wallpaper?

It is a wall covering with a magnet-receptive layer behind it, rather than a covering that is magnetic in itself. The iron sits in a primer or a thin sheet applied to the wall first, and the print goes over that. The name describes the build.

Will fridge magnets stick to it?

Not dependably. Pull drops steeply with every millimetre between the magnet and the iron behind the print, so a thin flat giveaway magnet has far less to work with than a small thick disc. Test the magnets you already own against the finished build.

Can you write on magnetic wallpaper?

Only if the top surface is a dry-erase finish as well. Magnetic and writable are separate properties, and one never implies the other. Say at the outset if you want both, because it changes what goes onto the wall before the print does.

Settle the layer behind the print first, then choose the design that goes over it.
