William Blake (1757-1827) was an English poet, painter and printmaker of the Romantic age. He worked largely unrecognised in his lifetime, his images reaching only a small audience. Today Blake is celebrated for pictures that are intensely visionary and mythological, drawn from an inner world of his own. His figures move between prophecy and dream, rendered with a draughtsman's precision. The recognition that eluded him in life now places Blake among England's most original artists.
