About Utagawa Hiroshige

Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist celebrated for his poetic landscape prints. He worked in an age when woodblock printing carried images of Japan to ordinary households. His series The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido and One Hundred Famous Views of Edo are among the best-loved images in Japanese art. Hiroshige had a rare gift for weather and mood: rain sweeping a road, or the last light settling over water.
