Maurice Prendergast (1858-1924) was an American Post-Impressionist. He is known for lively, mosaic-like watercolours and oils. His scenes of parks, beaches and seaside promenades shimmer with pattern and colour. Prendergast built each picture from small, deliberate touches, so a crowd reads as a field of bright fragments rather than single figures.
