About Eugène Boudin

Eugène Boudin (1824-1898) was born in Honfleur, the son of a harbour pilot, and painted the Normandy coast for fifty years. He worked outdoors before that was common practice, and talked the teenage Monet into doing the same. Corot called him the king of skies. Boudin's beach scenes at Trouville and Deauville record the new fashion for sea bathing. Crinolines on the sand, parasols, a band of grey water, and above it an enormous sky.

The range runs along the coast Boudin knew. There are beach parties at Deauville and Dieppe, shipping on the Touques, harbour views from Dordrecht, and sunsets where the whole picture is weather. A handful of Venice studies and portraits round it out. The skies carry these pictures: pale, moving, full of grey and rose. Prints come in sizes from a small study to a wide seascape.
