Edward Henry Potthast

Edward Henry Potthast (1857-1927) was an American Impressionist, born in Cincinnati to German immigrant parents. He trained there, then in Munich and Paris, where plein-air painting changed how he handled sunlight. From about 1900 he lived in New York and painted the crowded beaches of Coney Island and the New England coast. Ring Around the Rosie is his best-known picture. The paint is thick and loose, the colour high, the mood entirely holiday.

The Edward Henry Potthast Collection at BestOfBharat

The range covers his summer scenes along with quieter landscape and figure studies. A Summer Afternoon is here, and Walking in the Hills. Blues, warm sand and white dominate, with people painted as flecks of colour rather than portraits. Prints run from small sizes for a shelf or stairwell to large formats that can hold a whole wall on their own.

Edward Henry Potthast in Your Space

These are bright pictures, so they work best where the wall around them is calm. One large beach scene above a sofa gives a living room its focal point. Two smaller prints flank a bed well. The blues sit naturally with linen, cane and pale wood, and they lift a guest room or a bathroom. Walnut frames pick up the sand; a white frame pushes the blue forward. Keep them out of direct afternoon glare, which flattens the surface.

Every artwork here is an archival print, hand-framed to order and delivered ready to hang — made in India.
