About Camille Pissarro

Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was born on St Thomas in the Danish West Indies and settled in France in his twenties. He showed in all eight Impressionist exhibitions, the only painter who did. His subjects stayed rural and ordinary: apple pickers, a hay cart at Montfoucault, frost on a ploughed field, a washerwoman at Éragny. In the 1880s he took up the Neo-Impressionist dot for a few years, then let it go. Later he rented rooms above the Paris boulevards and painted the street below in every kind of weather.

The range covers both halves of Pissarro's working life. Farm scenes from Pontoise and Montfoucault carry greens and greys under a high sky. The Éragny pictures are brighter, with poplars and orchards in morning sunlight, worked in small strokes. Seascapes and a few flower pieces sit alongside them. Sizes run from small studies for a shelf to wide landscapes that can carry a bare wall on their own.
