Alfred Sisley
Alfred Sisley (1839-1899) was an Impressionist landscape painter, born in Paris to English parents and British by nationality all his life. He studied alongside Monet, Renoir and Bazille, and after his family's business collapsed in 1870 he painted in near-poverty. Sisley kept to landscape while the others turned to figures and city life. The flood at Port-Marly, the snow at Louveciennes, the poplars along the Loing. He returned to the same water and the same weather for three decades. Recognition arrived after his death.

The range leans on the river work. The Seine at Bougival and the avenue of chestnut trees show his handling of open sky above a low horizon. There are coastal pictures from his late trip to Wales, including Lady's Cove at Langland Bay, along with quieter studies of birds and farmland. Blues, greys, soft green and beige carry through the whole set, and nothing in it shouts.
