Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902) was a German-American painter of the Hudson River School. He is celebrated for vast, light-filled canvases of the Rocky Mountains and the American frontier. His paintings helped shape the popular image of the West, showing it as wide, luminous and untamed. Light is the real subject of his work, from the glow of dawn to the drama of a passing storm. Bierstadt worked on an ambitious scale, filling large canvases with mountain ranges and open valleys.
