Joaquin Sorolla Y Bastida

Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (1863-1923) was Spain's great painter of light. Born in Valencia and orphaned at two, he trained there and in Rome before major exhibitions in Paris and New York. "Sad Inheritance" made his reputation. "Walk on the Beach" and "Sewing the Sail" show what he did best: figures in strong sun, cloth flaring, water throwing light back up. His last major commission, the "Vision of Spain" panels for the Hispanic Society in New York, took the best part of a decade.

The range leans to Sorolla's garden and architecture studies. "Corner of the Garden, Alcázar, Sevilla" holds cypress shade against hot stone. "Hall of the Ambassadors, Alhambra, Granada" looks up into Nasrid tilework and carved plaster. "Palace of Pond, Royal Gardens in Seville" is all reflection. These are quiet paintings for their size, and they reward a close look at the brushwork.

Joaquín Sorolla in Your Space

Sorolla works where you want a window rather than a wall. The garden studies bring green and cool stone, which suits a bedroom or a dining room that faces away from the sun. Pair one large print with a plain linen shade and a pale wood floor. The palette sits easily with terracotta, cane and off-white. Frame in light oak to keep the Mediterranean feeling, or in slim black if the room is already busy.
